The 2023 football season produced many memorable moments and players.
Two South Jersey teams came home with state titles while a third team reached the same stage and fell short but will pick up the pieces with a bright future and move forward.
There were old-fashioned shootouts. Absegami and Cedar Creek combined for 98 points in the Pirates' 50-48 victory in their first home game under the lights in school history. Paul VI prevailed in a duel with Notre Dame in the first round of the New Jersey Non-Public A playoffs that resulted in 92 total points. The Eagles advanced with a 51-41 win.
There were low-scoring affairs led by stifling defenses. Penns Grove held Group 1 state finalist Glassboro scoreless in a 6-0 win. St. Augustine squeezed by Cherokee, 3-0, with a first quarter field goal by Antonio Freund.
There were players that flew under the radar at the beginning of the year that proceeded to make big splashes.
