CAMDEN — The Holy Spirit High School football team, ranked seventh in the latest South Jersey Sports Zone Top 15 high school football rankings, won its third straight game with a 23-12 triumph over No. 5 Camden at Farnham Park on Friday night.
Jahcere Ward rushed for two touchdowns for the Spartans in the first half. The Absecon program scored 17 unanswered points in the first half and forced a punt on each of the Panthers’ first four drives. Kicker Mason Forte made three field goals in the victory. Matt Abbott caught an 81-yard pass to help set up Forte's second field goal before halftime. Quarterback Ty Costabile finished 7-for-16 passing for 126 yards and an interception. Spirit was limited to 81 yards on the ground in the win.
Senior Tommy Innocente recorded three sacks. Abbott and Nick Medina earned two sacks apiece. Emanuel Gerena and Ty Watson each intercepted a pass. Watson recorded a team-high 5.5 tackles. Holy Spirit outscored Oakcrest and Hammonton by a combined 80 points in a pair of shutouts. The Spartans’ defense has allowed only 12 points over its last three games. They host Cape-Atlantic League rival Cedar Creek next Friday at 6 pm in Absecon.
Camden’s Mahki Brunson ran for a six-yard score in the setback and threw an 80-yard touchdown pass to Malik Redd-Hubbard. Redd-Hubbard caught six passes for 123 yards and a score. Kent State commit Azir Lee snared an interception and recovered a fumble in the loss. Brunson completed 18 of 29 passes for 239 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also ran for a game-high 80 yards. The Panthers host No. 9 Rancocas Valley in a West Jersey Football League Colonial Division showdown next Friday night at 6 pm.
