MEDFORD - The Cherokee High School baseball team waited a week to play its first game of the season as rain drenched the Garden State.
The result was a 4-3 loss to Eastern that concluded on a throwing error.
The following day, the Marlton program bounced back to squeeze out a 5-4 victory over Lenape Regional High School District rival Shawnee on a late run scored by Jason Brown.
Shawnee struck first on aground out to shortstop by Chase Roberts that scored Kayden Maybury in the bottom of the second inning.
Cherokee responded with four runs in the top of the third inning. Cameron Radimer led the inning off with a solo home run to left field even the count at 1-1. Brown followed up with a triple to center field. Virginia Tech commit Brett Gable poked a single to center to drive in Brown and give the Chiefs the lead. Harford College commit Jordan Henriquez blasted a moonshot to left field to give Cherokee a 4-1 lead.
The lead was short-lived as the Renegades tied the game at 4-4 with a three-run third inning. Chris Ahrens led off with a single and Lehigh commit Reid Uccello reached base on a hit by pitch. Shawnee scored a run on a throwing error and then on a failed tag attempt at the plate. Matt Piccinnini hit an RBI single to even the score.
